DAISY DERN BIO
|
Singer/songwriter Daisy Dern grew up in a musically diverse
household in Northern California's Marin County, where the
music of Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and
Linda Ronstadt were regulars on the family turntable along
with artists like Doc Watson, Ry Cooder, Ella Fitzgerald and
even Luciano Pavarotti. At the age of eight, Daisy began
playing piano, and by the time she was in her early teens, she
was also studying voice and writing and recording her own
songs on her Fostex four-track. She credits such
singer-songwriters as Dolly Parton, Carole King and James
Taylor for inspiring her to spend hours at the piano writing
and recording songs. Dreaming of a career in country music,
Daisy told her parents she would move to Nashville one day.
"My mom and dad are both artists and were always very
supportive," Daisy recalls, "in fact, they encouraged me to go
for my dream and never get a real job unless I really had to!"

After graduating from High School in the mid 1980's, Daisy attended
University of California at Santa Cruz, where she completed her
general education studies. Next she went on to Boston, Massachusetts
to study music at Berklee College of Music, where she honed her
skills in music theory, ear training, harmony, song writing and
voice. "It was a bit cold out there, but I sure learned a lot,"
Daisy says, "It was a very academically tough school and I learned
that I could do anything I put my mind to as long as I wanted it
badly enough." After a year in Boston, Daisy returned to the Bay
Area to study audio engineering and music business at San Francisco
State University and put her first country band together. She not
only fronted the Blue Horizon Band, but booked the gigs, managed the
band and hauled the sound system to and from the venues, performing
on weekends when she wasn't in school or teaching piano lessons to
local kids. After graduating from SF State with a degree in Music
Business, Daisy continued to play local honky tonks, fairs and
parties with her band. She also studied voice with famed vocal
coach, Judy Davis, who trained legendary entertainers such as Judy
Garland, Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand. As much as Daisy loved
the Bay Area and being near her family, she knew she had to try her
luck in Nashville. With several years of musical experience behind
her and her college degree in her pocket, Daisy decided it was time
to move to go......so she packed up her Volkswagen and headed South
to fulfill her childhood dream of scoring a record deal.
In 1995, Daisy not only moved to Music City, but met hit songwriter,
producer and former front-man of the ACM award-winning Gibson/Miller
Band, Dave Gibson. After they were married in 1997, Dave and Daisy
toured the world together, performing in Indonesia, Switzerland,
Ireland and all over the United States. It was when their daughter,
Savannah was two years old that Daisy realized she better take her
shot a getting a record deal. With their best songs in hand, Daisy
and Dave went into the studio with no idea of what was to come;
within weeks, Daisy would be signed to Mercury Records, Dave would
be her producer, and the two would have a single on it's way to the
radio airwaves.
After completing her debut album and enjoying success with her
Billboard-charting single, entitled "Gettin' Back To You," Daisy
parted ways with the label and decided to pursue her artistry and
songwriting on her own. She has had her songs recorded by Gordon
Mote ("Carry Me Away"), Stealing Angels ("If I Smoked"), Kristina
Cornell ("Little Red Balloon" and "Tumbleweed") and Brad Davis
("Gettin' Back To You"), and continues to write and record. Daisy is
the Creative Director for Savannah Music Group, which she co-owns
with Dave Gibson and Jeff Cohen.
